when cold hits you hard

All basics of the common cold that you should be aware of….

With summer being finally over, and winters moving in-- cold and flu season has arrived along. Millions of Pakistanis get the common cold each year, often more than once. To counter coughs and runny nose, many will turn to counter medications available for relief without a prescription.

In winters, cold and dry air increases the possibility that your airways get more vulnerable to infection, because of the dry mucosa (inner lining) of airways. It all starts from flu and common cold due to seasonal changes which lead to dry cough and then phlegmatic cough.

What are the other factors that cause a cough?

Apart from seasonal impacts, the following are the factors that cause cough:

  • Smoking
  • Numerous environmental irritants are known to induce coughing such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, smoke from burning vegetation, and vehicle exhaust. Smoking paralyzes cells responsible to expel phlegm making them unable to do their job. Since the toxins and chemicals present in cigarette smoke are left in place they have more time to cause damage to sensitive lung tissue and they get easily infected. So, recurrent and persistent cough is common among smokers.

    • Asthma & Allergies:

The hypersensitive individuals get easily caught by respiratory infection due to slight changes in inhaled air quality either due to pollution and occupational hazards which results in sneezing, flu, and cough.

    • Bacterial and Viral contagious Infections:

This is very common in immune-deficient individuals, mostly caused by close contact with an affected person.

    • Age:

Age-related changes in the lungs include

    • The weakening of the respiratory muscles
    • The decline in the effectiveness of lung defense mechanism

Heading to the pharmacy for some relief?

While medications do not cure or shorten the common cold or flu, they can ease some symptoms. Finding a product that fits your needs, however, may not be that straightforward.

How to safely choose cough and cold medicines

So how to choose from a myriad of similar products? First, understand that many products contain more active ingredients than you need. And yes, those extra active ingredients have side effects and may interact with other medicines you take. The simplest advice is to go herbal and check the list of active and natural ingredients on the package and pick a product that targets your particular symptoms.
