Do you know obesity can cause life risk

Are you someone who is facing body shaming or do you know someone who is facing similar issues and society is crushing their confidence in this way? In a society like this, we should remember to nurture our loved ones by telling them how beautiful they are. But with that we also need to make them aware of the fact that obesity is not something casual, it can cause life risk.

What is obesity for you?

For a layperson, obesity is simply being fat. Someone who eats a lot and doesn’t exercise at all and so on. Well, this is not the story, facts have proven that someone who doesn’t eat that much can also be affected by obesity. Obesity is a serious health condition, in which an individual has accumulated too much body fat, and this body fat is now causing serious health issues to that individual.

How can you conclude if you are ‘obese’ or not?

A BMI number is designed to give you an idea of how much body fat you have as a ratio of your weight to height. It's measured by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared. A reading at or over 30 means you're obese. A reading at or over 40 is severe obesity.

Also if a person’s weight is 20% higher than the normal range, then this person is ‘obese’.

What are the factors that can cause weight gain?

Many factors play a vital role in your weight gains such as genetics, environments, and behaviors. While you can’t control your genes you can change your lifestyle. Here are some of the unhealthy behaviors that can cause obesity, some will put you in complete shock.

  1. Sedentary Lifestyle:

There is a strong correlation between physical inactivity and weight gain, habits like playing computer games instead of physical activities outside, the trend of using automobiles and not preferring walk or cycling, and hours of sitting while working at offices reduces manual work.

    1. Genetics:

A person is more likely to develop obesity if one or both parents are obese. Genetics also affects hormones involved in fat metabolism. For example, one genetic cause is leptin deficiency. Leptin controls weight by signaling the brain to eat less when body fat stores are too high. If for some reason, the body cannot produce enough leptin or leptin cannot signal the brain to eat less, this control is lost, and obesity occurs.

    1. A diet high in simple carbohydrate:

Some scientists believe that simple carbohydrate (sugar, fructose, dessert, soft drinks, beer, wine, etc.) contribute to weight gain because they are more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream than complex carbohydrate (pasta, brown rice, grains, vegetables, raw fruits, etc.) and thus causes more pronounced insulin release after a meal than complex carbohydrate. Insulin is the hormone of the pancreas responsible for the storage of excess glucose in the form of fat.

    1. Junk food/Overeating:

If the diet is high in fat. Foods high in fat or sugar (e.g. fast food, fried food, and sweets) have high energy density (foods that have a lot of calories in a small amount of food) which contributes to weight gain.

    1. Frequency of eating:

The relationship between frequency of eating (how often you eat) and weight is somewhat controversial. There are many reports of overweight people eating less often than people of normal weight. Scientists have observed that people who eat small meals four or five times daily have lower cholesterols and more stable blood sugar levels than people who eat less frequently (2-3) large meals daily).

    1. Medication

Medication associated with weight gain include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsant
  • Diabetes Medication
  • Corticosteroids
  • Certain hormones (Oral contraceptives)
  • High blood pressure Medication
  • Antihistamine
